SACN
Ms. Flora Mokgohloa

Context

On 21 July, the Pope through the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences invited Mayor from across the globe to discuss the challenge of modern slavery and human trafficking as it affects cities. The workshop theme was Modern Slavery and Climate Change : The Commitment of the Cities. Close to 40 Mayors addressed the workshop which concluded with a message from Pope Francis.

The workshop concluded with a Declaration signed by all Mayors.
It is Pope Francis’s intent to request to the UN in his message on 25 September, to consider modern slavery and human trafficking as a crime against humanity and to put moral pressure on the UN to make sure that the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to give enough weight to these two dramatic emergencies.
